§ 01 — HOW IT STARTED

Larder & Oak started in a Triple Crown kitchen with a single oak plank, a Derby Day party that ran out of food too early, and a friend who said: you should be selling this.

Maggie grew up in Boone County, the youngest of four. Her grandmother kept a real larder — a small unheated room off the back porch where country hams hung from the rafters and apples sat in straw through January. She watched her mother host bridge nights with cheese on Ritz crackers and felt, even at nine, that there was a more generous version of that.

Twenty years later, after a culinary degree from Sullivan and seven years cooking the line at restaurants in Cincinnati and Louisville, she came back to Florence and started building boards out of her home kitchen. The Derby Day board for the Marshalls in 2019 led to three more orders that week. By the end of that year there were eighty-six.

Today the studio is two blocks from where Maggie grew up. She still personally selects every cheese, hand-slices every charcuterie meat, and signs the card on every gift box. It is, by design, a small operation — capped at what one charcutier and a small Saturday-morning team can do properly.

“I only make boards I would put on my own table on a Sunday. If it doesn’t belong there, it doesn’t belong on yours.”
